Chapter Sixteen

Mara

Danielle was itching to get into something and I would put my designer shoe so far up her ass tonight if she tried. My entire family planned on being here and I wasn’t going for it today. Something told me that Lupe was bracing herself for it also. The entire time Danni stood at our table I watched as Lupe turned toward us awkwardly numerous times in her seat. There was something strange going on within me. I felt a connection with Lupe, the desire to protect her also meant I was protecting myself. A half an hour into our rehearsal dinner Grandpa Joe and my Grandma walked into the room. My face lit up, I was seriously excited about seeing them. Though not seeing my mom or Mel mad me sad.

My grandmother looked in my direction and smiled warmly, it took me by surprise. I waved in her direction as we let Claire run down the schedule.

“You see that?” Dom turned to me and asked.

“Yeah, I just wish my mom would come.” I said

“She’ll be here.” He promised confidently. I wouldn’t hold my breath though. For the next hour I took in the atmosphere. The air in the room felt festive but I knew how fragile my time was. Men and women all sat around talking, laughing and drinking. Waiters and Waitress’ stood around anticipating guests needs. For a brief moment time stood still in the same instant my mother walked into the room. She was accompanied by Mel and they both wore all white with red accents. All eyes fell on them as she sashayed over in my direction. I really didn’t know what to expect when she stopped in front of me.

“Congratulations Mara, Dominic.” She pulled me in for a hug and kissed me on the cheek before doing the same to Dom.

“Congratulations.” Mel said shaking both our hands. My night could officially begin. No matter how much trash I talk about my family, they are still mine. My mother drove me mad ninety percent of the time but a big part of me wanted her approval. I needed her validation. Most of my childhood was spent trying to get her to see me. To really see me but I never felt like I succeeded. I overheard her once tell a friend that I reminded her so much of herself when she was younger that she couldn’t stand it.

It was in that moment that I decided to force her to say her true feelings out loud. Micah didn’t have to prove anything to anyone. I watched him enjoying himself with Jamila. He seemed so happy and content. He could ride the Arnold Blake wave, expected only to be himself. Things were never that cut and dry for me. I was always proving myself. I was always in the shadows of my parents or my brother. Now, I had the chance to be Mara Anderson the wife of one of the biggest technology firm owners in the USA.
